Yukinko Akira – rhythm painting

Going through some of my old stuff and unsorted papers I came across this flyer…

[picture to be uploaded some time]

I got this at a performance of the painter /performance artist Yukinko Akira in Kobe in February.

I was travelling alone and didn’t have much to do (Mainly because I suddenly got shy to call the Japanese couple I had randomly talked to in the museum back in Vienna and who were friendly enough to give me their address. I hate myself being chicken!). Well, anyways I was on my way to the youth hostel which was close to Sannomiya station. The evenings were rather chilly… But since I was bored and had nothing else to do I was really glad to stumble upon anything out of the ordinary. And believe me, Yukinko Akiras Performances are waaay out of ordinary. First, imagine this skinny guy standing in front of his easel.

And now imagine he’s not just standing there, but actually jumping and dancing to the rhythms produced by his very own porable beat box!!!  WHILE AT THE SAME TIME producing some really nice art! This guy rocks, literally!!

The picture with the scull like structure turned out to be a really nice portrait in the end!! And the flower picture was awesome too!! in the end he took the picture and rolled it up in the shape of a flower bouquet and bowed down while offering it to the audience which had gathered by then (since he was performing at a little square near the station people waiting would naturally gather… and everyone loved it 😀 ) It was something entirely new for me to watch and highly entertaining! I recommend to stay and watch should you happen to come upon one of his performances!!

Priscilla Ahn- A good day

I love Priscilla Ahns Music. Her singing style and lyrics are amazing. Listening to her music makes me smile♣

My favourite song is wallflower 🙂 (The quality of the youtube video is not so good.. I think you can also listen to it on her homepage Also check out this interview where she’s talking about her childhood, how she left to become a singer/songwriter and stuff!

I love this CD especially since it took me so long to get it. I first listened to her CD in 2008, in that huge CD shop near the big Shibuya crossing (the one that has a starbucks inside). It was on the recommodation shelves at starbucks. I listened to it and wrote her name down in my note book to buy the CD later. However, I returned home without buying it (I think all of us were kind of short on money -_-“). I regretted not getting it. I didn’t really see it in any stores back home (I didn’t look too hard though) and didn’t want to buy it on the internet… But I still wanted the CD.

So when I happened to come back half a year later I was determined to buy it. I felt kind of awkward asking for it (Somehow I always feel awkward asking shop clerks for stuff… or ordering stuff… or… well. ) So I ended up in front of the reommended shelves… And there it was. Just two or so CDs left. And one for me. I bought it immediately (despite not having a CD player with me… I could only listen to it upon returning home >_<).

Well, written down like that it doesn’t really sound interesting at all… but I was so happy I still got to have that CD, that it was still in the very place half a year later, just as if it had been waiting for me 🙂

Just now, checking out her homepage so I could link it I read that Priscilla Ahn got married!!

♣ !!!! Congratulations !!!! ♣

She wrote about her very spontaneous wedding in her blog. I really love that they decided so spontaneously… Sometimes everything seems to come together quite perfectly! I really wish that one day I’ll have such a happy wedding 🙂 I’m really looking forward to her new album too♥

Corinne Bailey Rae <3

I bought Corinne Bailey Raes CD some weeks ago ♥

I don’t really buy a lot CDs. So me buying a CD means I really really like the music (or the CD cover ;P). But this was special. I wanted the CD really badly. After listening to it at a friends house in Tokyo I really liked it and listened to it on you tube a lot, then I borrowed a friends CD. I wanted to buy it at a regular shop. The first shop only had one of her CDs which didn’t have my favourite song, the next shop didn’t have any of her CDs. The third shop I went to was a CD shop but they only had classical music and opera -_-” So I gave in and ordered it on amazon. Altough I had resolved to buy the CD in a real shop *sigh*

Once I had the CD all that didn’t matter, I was really happy listening to the CD (after I had my mum extract the two CDs from the case, I was afraid of breaking them, they were stuck firmly).

Definately one of my favourite CDs. I really love her interpretations, they go straight to the heart. Her songs are so evocative and her voice is beautiful… I’m listening to the first of the two CDs right now 🙂 I put them into separate cases, btw ♣

Hikawa Kiyoshi – Ochiba shigure

氷川きよし ・落ち葉しぐれ

The link is a record by the original singer,  三浦洸一. I couldn’t find this particular song sung by Hikawa Kiyoshi on youtube. However, I’ll link this interwiew with him which features parts of 三 味線旅がらす(one of his original songs I think) so you can get an impression of what his voice is like. I must say I like Hikawa’s version better, it’s not dragging so much… might be to the old recordings though. I don’t remember who I got this song from… (I should mention most of my music is some music friends gave to me so it always comes to me as a surprise). But I really like this song!

Translation (just a very quick one)

♣ ◊ ♣ ◊ ♣ ◊ ♣ ◊ ♣ ◊ ♣ ◊ ♣ ◊ ♣ ◊ ♣ ◊ ♣ ◊ ♣ ◊ ♣ ◊ ♣ ◊ ♣ ◊

The fallen leaves of the travellers way, wet from a sudden autumn rain shower

The the never-ceasing song of a playing guitar

Hopes and dreams are fading away

The song, too a wanderer of tears   (渡り鳥 actually means migrating bird, but also vagabond, wanderer)

Worn-out from the Sake, haggard from regret

the guitar play of drifting (wandering) men

this day too, you don’t return

the nightly breeze calling to distant lands

In the dark backstreets, the bar districts (area where there are many bars)

Just the guitar melody of my home

The light is also lonely… In the light of the fireflies

Crying lonely tears in their shine.

Please give your opinions on the translation. It’s not a verbatim translation really, it was difficult to match it with the lines at times and  it’s quite ambiguous. (Like apparently kage doesn’t only mean shadow, shade, silhouette but can also mean light)  I tried do get the meaning and mood across as I understood it. I really welcome suggestions how I could improve it!!!

Akane is an Artist I watched in Kobe… She was performing near the train station, singing and playing her keyboard in the icy wind…With a friend? manager? handing out leaflets to the crowd and selling CDs.

<– I bought her CD. It’s just 3 tracks, but it has the lyrics! (She signed it. And she wrote she’s wishing me a nice trip! 😀 ) Her music has a very naive touch to it, and it’s refreshing listening to it…

Check out her homepage!

You can listen to one of her tracks on her blog (youtube video embedded on the right side bar)

Nicki Wells

I want to introduce one of my favourite singers ♥

Nicky Wells, from the UK. She has one of the most amazing voices I’ve ever heard and I absolutely adore her musical style!! You can really feel there’s a deep meaning to her songs. It’s simply beautiful.

And even better live. ♣ Since I don’t live in London I keep listening to the tracks on her myspace site all the time. My absolute favourite is “silver anklets“.  I really hope many more people will get to listen to her music!!!

Our diso minds – just the two of us

This thursday I went to OUR DISO MINDS ‘s concert♥

I really like their sound…Although most their songs are kind of sad-ish… But Mira-lu’s singing is awesome! I loved the guitar too! This time it was “Just the two of us” (just Mira-lu and the guitar player)

<– I bought their CD too♥

The CD is really well done. (get more pics of the cover shooting here and here) I liked the LIVE even better though. Whether that’s because I generally like just singing& guitar or because the atmosphere at live concerts is just so much more intense I don’t know. The location was also cool btw. It was at TUNNEL in Vienna. They have live music every day from 9 pm! Many of their concerts are free (you give whatever amount you feel appropriate). I’d love to go there with some friends just to hang out… (I was alone this time… ):

Well, check out their songs on their myspace site!! I hope there’ll be more concerts in the future! (Although the next one seems to be in switzerland…)

♣Well, that’s it for today♣
